The Chevrolet Equinox debuted in 2004 as the first crossover SUV available from Chevrolet. This mid-size vehicle was introduced along with the ill-fated Pontiac Torrent to replace the Pontiac Aztek. It was designed for commuters and families who wanted a safe and substantial vehicle rather than traditional off-roading purposes.
It came with a 3.4L engine that produced 185 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque. It was designed on the popular GM Theta architecture, adapted with an all-wheel drive system and a longer wheelbase for a smoother ride.
The 2006 Chevrolet Equinox added standard antilock brakes on all models for safety and ease of handling. Different trims added different features as well, with heated cloth seats on the inside. The exterior boasted body-color rearview mirrors and body-colored fascias. The 2007 Equinox came with a stability control system that helped keep the Equinox upright and controllable even on slippery or rough terrain. In-vehicle navigation and remote starter system were also added. The 2008 Equinox added two new trim levels. The LTZ included all top-of-the-line accessories and features, while the Sport included a sport-tuned suspension for spirited driving and a 3.6L V6 engine producing 264 hp. Every Equinox trim level added OnStar in-vehicle telematics.
The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox got a brand new look for a brand new generation. The body was sleeker and more aerodynamic than ever, with a new 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that produced 182 hp and an optional 3.0L V6 that produced 264 hp. In 2011, V6 models could use E85 gasoline, while the OnStar subscription was upgraded to Directions and Connections. The 2012 model added safety items like forward collision alert, lane departure warning systems, and a standard rearview camera. The 2013 model saw a 3.6L V6 engine that produced 301 hp, as well as tech features like smartphone app integration. The rear seat entertainment system was brought back by popular demand. Few changes were made until 2016, when the exterior was revamped for a more contemporary look with more lights.
